Niels Bohr and the Atomic Model
Bohr proposed in 1913 that electrons occupy fixed orbits and jump between them by absorbing or emitting photons. His model explained the sharp lines of hydrogen spectra overnight. It launched quantum mechanics, though later orbital pictures replaced the neat planetary atom. Bohr also founded his Copenhagen institute and argued with Einstein over the meaning of quantum theory..
