Lavoisier and the Chemistry of Combustion
Antoine Lavoisier burned materials in sealed air and showed that burning gains weight from a component of air, which he named oxygen. Phlogiston, the supposed fire essence that flowed out of burning matter, died in those flasks. He redefined elements, wrote the first modern chemistry textbook, and reformed chemical nomenclature.
