Robert Bunsen perfected the gas burner that bears his name as a clean laboratory flame, but his career ranged far wider. With Kirchhoff he invented spectral analysis and discovered rubidium and cesium around 1860. He lost an eye in a cacodyl explosion and kept right on working.
